surrounded by chain link and concreted boarded by 6th, 7th, taylor and jackson street. this site used to be vibrant. it was home to chinatown. in '08 we were here when archaeologist excavated the site for after trtifacts. later today the city could take the first step toward bringing the space back to life when council members decide whether or not to approve basic redevelopment plans for the site and give the go-ahead to continue talks with the developer. that developer would pay the city if they come to an agreement $24 million for this parcel and on it would build six-story apartment buildings housing 600 units and retail space, green space for events like farmer's market and a new creative center for the arts. >> this is a very special place. this is one of the three surviving japantowns in the state of california. we know we have to get this right and it has to be right and not just for the developer or for the city coffers but it has to be right by the community. >> reporter: the city wanted this to happen years ago. we're talking about 2007, 2008. they seemed to have an agreeme

patch surrounded by a chain linked fence bordered by 6th, 7th, jackson and taylor streets. it used to be home to san francisco's chinatown. chinatown disappeared and the city corporation yard eventually took its place but that too went away leaving this concrete wasteland. later today they could take steps to bring the space back to life when council members decide to approve the basic redevelopment plans for this site and give the go ahead to continue talks with the developer. that developer williams and dane development would pay the city $24 million for this parcel and on it build retail space, six-story apartment buildings with 600 units, green space for farmer's market and creative center for the arts. the city as you mentioned wanted to have this happen years ago but williams and dane pulled back when the recession hit. >> inevitably there have been challenges it making sure that whatever goes there works with the community. we've been working with the community and other neighborhood organizations now for six years to develop a vision that is both developable and compatible
